Build Your Credibility as a Freelancer

In her recent PC World blog (not to be confused with the well-known retailer), Lauren Barry offers some hints and tips as to how you can build a solid reputation as a freelancer; and we’ve added some of our hints and tips too:

Make sure your website is a great shop window

Ensure your website is professional and sleek.  If it doesn’t look right, prospective customers will simply move on; just as they would in the High Street.  The good news is you don’t need to spend a fortune on web developers – there are plenty of professional templates available from sites such as Theme Forest – many for under £20.  However – make sure you have a domain name that matches your company name, and beware as any email address ends in the ‘dot com’ of your internet provider screams out ‘amateur’.

Ask for recommendations

Sing your own praises and no one listens; but they will take note of recommendations and endorsements from clients and former colleagues.  Don’t forget to use them on Linked In too – as this is often the first port of call for prospective clients.

Have a great online portfolio

Make sure that any prospective client can readily access an online portfolio from you.  Whether this be on your website or on social media platforms such as Linked In, make sure it looks professional and that it is always up-to-date.  In terms of your social media presence, make sure that everything you post is palatable to potential clients – and this includes what you post on platforms such as Facebook.

Look ‘the business’

When meeting a client always make sure you ‘dress for the occasion’ and look like the professional freelancer that you are wanting to portray.  Clearly you won’t always be walking around in a suit, but make sure you’re always presentable – as you never know when/how/where your next client will come from. ALWAYS CARRY YOUR BUSINESS CARDS – and make sure they are slick and professional.  The free and cheap ones are free and cheap for a reason.

Charge fairly and deliver on time

Ensure your fees are fair and clear – no one wants to pay for ‘hidden extras’.  Transparency is king.  Finally, always deliver on time and to the highest standard.

Remember – you’re only as good as your last contract.
